Black Belt Dobok Badges Explained

2 min read

There are a few different black belt doboks in use at Hapkido Brisbane. However, the doboks I make are a little different. Each badge has been personally chosen by me, most have been designed by me, and every one of them is sewn on by me. More importantly, each badge has a specific meaning and represents something I believe is important to our club, our martial art, and the journey of a black belt.

Black Belt Club Badge — Left Sleeve

Although this is a generic badge available from martial arts suppliers, its meaning on a Hapkido Brisbane dobok is personal.

By placing this badge on your sleeve, I am saying that I am happy for you to represent Hapkido Brisbane in a leadership role. It is a sign of trust and recognition that you are someone who can help set an example for others and uphold the standards and values of our club.

Eagle Badge — Back of the Dobok

Your 1st Dan certificate includes the words:

“Our power of perseverance is as that of an eagle. We soar above our challengers.”

The eagle is a powerful symbol of the qualities we strive to develop through Hapkido.

• Sharp vision and awareness: An eagle’s exceptional eyesight reminds us to remain alert, read our opponent’s movements, judge distance, and anticipate what might happen next.

• Timing and economy of movement: An eagle conserves energy as it soars, then acts decisively when the opportunity arises. In Hapkido, we learn to avoid unnecessary effort and use the right technique at the right moment.

• Strength, discipline, and perseverance: The eagle represents the proud and disciplined spirit of a Hapkido practitioner, combining sharp awareness with coordinated strength and the determination to overcome challenges.

The eagle is a reminder that earning a black belt is not simply about learning techniques. It is about developing the mindset, discipline, and perseverance to keep improving and rise above the challenges we face.

Dual Flags Badge — South Korea and Australia

The combination of the South Korean flag (Taegukgi) and the Australian national flag represents both respect for Hapkido’s Korean origins and our place practising the art here in Australia.

It acknowledges the traditions from which Hapkido comes while reflecting the connection we have built between Korean martial arts and our Australian Hapkido Brisbane community.

Together, the two flags represent respect for our roots, pride in our club, and the international spirit that brings Hapkido practitioners together.

Every badge has a purpose. They are not simply decorations on a uniform. They represent our values, our heritage, our club, and the responsibilities that come with wearing a black belt at Hapkido Brisbane.
