In Hapkido, achieving a Dan rank means entering the stage of serious, mature training. Dans are split into functional tiers, each carrying an official title that reflects the practitioner’s martial arts responsibility and spiritual authority.

1st to 3rd Dan: The Novice Black Belts

At this stage, practitioners are considered “senior students” or “junior leaders.” They have mastered the physical fundamentals and are beginning to learn how to guide others.

1st Dan — Il Dan (일단):

First Degree / Beginning Step. This marks the completion of basic training and the true beginning of Hapkido study.

Title: Jo Kyo Nim (조교님) – Assistant Instructor.

2nd Dan — Ee Dan (이단):

Second Degree. The practitioner refines their technique, fluidly connecting multiple joint locks, throws, and counter-attacks.

Title: Kyo Sa Nim (교사님) – Instructor.

3rd Dan — Sam Dan (삼단): Third Degree. The practitioner develops a deeper understanding of the core Hapkido principles—Yu (water/fluidity), Won (circular motion), and Hwa (harmony).

Title: Kyo Bum Nim  (부사범님) – Deputy/Assistant Master.

4th to 6th Dan: The Master Ranks

At this level, the focus shifts from purely physical execution to deep strategic, philosophical, and tactical expertise.

4th Dan — Sa Dan (사단): Fourth Degree. This is widely recognized as the entry point into true “Master” status.

Title: Sa Bum Nim (사범님) – Master Instructor.

5th Dan — Oh Dan (오단): Fifth Degree. The master is expected to possess a deep understanding of internal energy (Ki) and anatomical pressure points.

Title: Sa Bum Nim (사범님) – Master
